If your dog growls, stiffens, or guards food, toys, space, or even people… it can feel confusing, stressful, and sometimes frightening.
You might be wondering:
“Why is this happening?”
“Did I do something wrong?”
“Is this going to get worse?”
You’re not alone—and this is something that can be understood and improved with the right approach.
🔹 What is Resource Guarding?
Resource guarding is a behaviour where a dog tries to protect something they value. T
his might include: f
ood or chews toys
resting places (like a couch or bed)
people
space
Guarding behaviours can look like: freezing or stillness stiff body or tail growling snapping or biting
These are not “bad behaviours.”
They are communication.
🔹 Why Dogs Resource Guard
Dogs guard resources because of how they feel about losing them. Common reasons include:
uncertainty or lack of predictability
past experiences
competition in multi-dog homes
high value placed on certain items
stress or over-arousal
In many cases, resource guarding is not about dominance—it’s about emotion and learning history.
🔹 Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work
Many approaches focus on stopping the behaviour.
But if we only focus on the behaviour and ignore:
how the dog feels
what they’ve learned
the environment around them
…the behaviour often returns or escalates.
🔹 My Approach
I use concept-based, game-based training to help dogs:
feel safer around their resources
understand what to expect
learn to make better choices
change their emotional response over time
This means we are not just stopping guarding—we are changing the picture that created it.
🔹 Resource Guarding in Multi-Dog Homes
In homes with more than one dog, guarding can become more complex.
Dogs may:
compete for space or attention
guard from each other
feel increased pressure around resources
We work on: predictability structure reducing stress teaching safe patterns

🔹 FAQ
Can resource guarding be fixed?
Yes. With the right approach, dogs can learn to feel safer and respond differently over time.
Should I take things away from my dog to teach them?
Repeated removal can increase guarding.
We focus on building trust and predictability instead.
Is resource guarding aggression?
It’s a behaviour rooted in emotion. Understanding that emotion is key to changing it.
