Helping Dogs Who Feel Big Emotions in a Busy World
If your dog barks, lunges, panics, jumps, spins, freezes, pulls, overreacts, or struggles to settle, you are not alone.
Many dogs are not being “bad” or stubborn. They are overwhelmed, over-aroused, worried, frustrated, under-skilled, or struggling to cope with the world around them.
At Walkabout Canine Consulting, I help dogs and their humans move from chaos to calm through science-based behaviour coaching that focuses on emotional safety, practical life skills, and real-world success.

Reactivity Is Often About Emotion, Not Defiance
Reactivity can look different from dog to dog:
* barking and lunging on walks
* reacting to visitors
* over-excitement around dogs or people
* freezing or shutting down
* frantic jumping or mouthing
* inability to settle
* pulling intensely on leash
* explosive behaviour when frustrated
* hypervigilance or scanning the environment
* difficulty recovering after excitement or stress
Some dogs react because they are worried.
Some react because they are frustrated.
Some are overwhelmed by excitement or arousal. And many dogs are carrying a stress bucket that is already overflowing before the trigger even appears.
Behaviour is communication.
When we understand the emotional “why” behind the behaviour, we can begin teaching safer, calmer, and more successful patterns.
Calmness Is a Skill That Can Be Built
Many dogs struggling with reactivity or high arousal have never truly learned: how to settle how to disengage from the environment how to regulate excitement how to recover from stress how to feel optimistic and safe in challenging situations This is where behaviour coaching becomes so important. Rather than relying on punishment or suppression, my approach focuses on: emotional regulation relationship building calmness skills confidence building predictable routines practical life skills reinforcement-based learning changing emotional associations Dogs learn through patterns, pictures, and experiences. Small changes repeated consistently can create enormous emotional change over time.
Common Behaviour Concerns I Help With
Dog Reactivity Barking, lunging, growling, or emotional outbursts around dogs, people, sounds, or movement.
Fearful & Anxious Dogs Dogs who struggle with uncertainty, environmental sensitivity, handling, visitors, or new situations.

Visitor & Household Chaos Dogs who become highly emotional during arrivals, movement, excitement, or busy household routines. Adolescent Dog Behaviour Teenage dogs struggling with emotional control, overexcitement, frustration, and life skills. Emotional Recovery & Resilience Helping dogs build optimism, coping skills, and the ability to recover more easily from stressors.
My Approach to Behaviour Coaching
I use science-based, fear-free methods rooted in emotional understanding and practical coaching.
My work combines: concept-based learning grounded in learning theory, games-based engagement, emotional regulation strategies, enrichment and calmness work, management systems, life skill development, and reinforcement-based behaviour change.
I will look at the whole picture:
stress levels, routines, sleep and recovery, environment, relationships, arousal patterns, physical wellness, predictability, and daily experiences.
Because behaviour does not happen in isolation and dogs are not static beings. Their emotions, coping abilities, and behaviour are constantly changing based on what they experience.
You Do Not Need to “Correct” Emotion
Many dog guardians are told:
“Your dog needs more discipline.”
“You need to show leadership.”
“They’re trying to dominate.”
“You just need to stop the behaviour.”
But suppressing behaviour does not change how a dog feels underneath. Real behaviour change happens when dogs: feel safer learn better coping skills build confidence experience predictability practice calmer patterns repeatedly.
Skills don’t fail. Context overwhelms. That is why we focus on helping dogs build the ability to cope successfully in the real world.
Virtual & In-Person Support
Behaviour support is available:
- virtually across Canada and beyond
- in-person in Kingsville, Leamington, and surrounding Essex County areas
Many reactivity and emotional behaviour cases are highly successful virtually because we can coach within the dog’s real everyday environment.
Your Dog Is Not Broken
Fear, reactivity, and high arousal can feel exhausting and emotionally heavy for both dogs and their humans. But behaviour can change. With clear guidance, calm structure, and practical strategies, dogs can learn safer and more successful ways to navigate the world around them.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my dog reactive on walks?
Dogs may react due to fear, frustration, excitement, stress, over-arousal, lack of coping skills, or previous learning experiences.
Is reactivity the same as aggression?
Not always. Many reactive dogs are struggling emotionally rather than attempting to cause harm.
Can over-arousal affect behaviour?
Yes. Chronic excitement, stress, frustration, and overstimulation can impact a dog’s ability to think clearly and cope successfully in many areas of their life.
Can fearful or reactive dogs improve?
Absolutely. With appropriate coaching, management, emotional support, and skill-building, many dogs make significant progress.
Do you use punishment-based training methods?
No. My work is science-based, humane, and focused on emotional safety, relationship building, and practical life skills.
