Dog Communication

“How Do You and Your Dog Communicate?”

Have you ever thought about how you and your dog communicate? Today, I was reminded of this when our car alarm went off in the driveway. Liam, my Border Terrier, came running to find me, clearly letting me know that something was up. Of course, I had already heard the alarm, but I was so proud that Liam instinctively came to me.

You see, I’ve trained him to alert me instead of reacting in other ways. Once he reached me, I reassured him with a simple phrase we use: “It’s fine, you can get easy.” That’s his cue to emotionally down-regulate, to let go of his alertness and settle. And he did just that—he relaxed and returned to his calm, easy-going self.

This simple moment reminded me how much communication is a two-way street with our dogs. We have so many opportunities to facilitate meaningful conversations with them—through body language, verbal cues, and shared routines. For Liam, “get easy” is one of our ways to connect, letting him know it’s safe to relax.

Dogs communicate with us all the time. Whether it’s through alerting, nudging, or even just a soft gaze, they’re always looking for a response. Building that back-and-forth dialogue helps strengthen our relationship and gives them the confidence to share what’s on their mind.

So, here’s a question for you: How does your dog communicate with you, and how do you encourage that conversation?

I’d love to hear your stories—let’s share and learn from each other!

This version is written in a conversational tone, keeps your story at the centre, and includes a call-to-action to invite engagement from your audience. Does this align with what you were looking for?
