Recall

Unintended Consequences or Not?

It's always amusing when owners tell me their dog doesn't have a good recall, but then with a proud smile, they add, "But if I say 'snack,' they come running every time!" I think to myself, "Great! You've nailed recall training without even knowing it!"

So, I ask them, "How did you train that?" And they respond, "Well, I give them a snack when they come." Perfect! You've discovered the magic of reinforcements, building behaviours through repetition and consistency.

Now, let's take this concept and apply it to everything we want to teach our dogs! If they can learn to come for a snack, they can learn to come for a "come" too. It's all about making it worth their while and being consistent. So, next time you're working on recall, remember: if it works for "snack," it can work for anything else!

If you aren't using positive reinforcement then how do you build engagement, relationship and desire for listening.
