Problem behaviour? How do we turn it from naughty to nice? Dogs do ultimately do what works for them.
Young dogs like to be busy so if left to their own devices they will keep themselves busy if they have lots of energy to spare. That leads us to how do we expend energy in our dogs? Most owners think immediately that it must be physical exercise, yes that can be a piece of the puzzle but not always the fix. Young dogs are learning and still exploring their world much like we do when we are young. We learn through play and ultimately training (school). Satisfying our dogs mental energy needs can be as easy as taking a few short sessions in a day to play a game.....this game can be anything from teaching your dog to fetch, sit/stay, learning to walk at your side. Working on a kong toy which teaches him to be calm really, really anything you want your dog to learn. By keeping it positive its all fun and games to your dog. Most enjoy training and why not use up some of their breakfast or supper and let them train. I have seen dogs who are already full train for food just for the sake of the training.
The above picture shows a pup getting into something interesting because it has energy to burn then to the pup who is now tuckered out from mental energy used from doing some constructure activities like learning fetch and walk nice by owners side.
